Growing grosse lisse tomatoes in pots. Requires a 15 to 18m stake. San Marzano can be grown in a small pot minimum 25cm diameter. A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants.

Transplant when seedlings are easily handled 10-15cm. Spring-Summer and Winter in warmer areas. Firm down and keep moist.

They will send out supplementary feeder roots that will add to the amount of fruit produced. Grosse Lisse is a popular heirloom tomato producing large smooth red fruits with excellent flavour. One traditional and easy way is with a single long untreated wood or metal stake that the plant can continue to be tied to as it grows taller.

Its a great all-round tomato. They will need regular liquid fertilising but the effort will be very rewarding. Grosse Lisse plants produce a bumper yield of medium-large rounded tomatoes.

Nearly all tomatoes may be grown successfully in pots although the larger varieties need large deep tubs 50-60cm with good staking or support. If you dont have the space for crop rotation tomatoes grow extremely well in pots. When growing larger varieties choose larger pots.

Because it is a bush type there is no need to stake it. The first variety to go in is an old favourite of mine - Grosse Lisse Lycopersicon esculentumGrosse Lisse and I pretty much plant it every year. 50 seeds per packet.

Push mulch up to the main trunk as plants grow. Early morning around the base of the plant is the most beneficial method. Sow direct in warm conditions or raise in trays of Yates Seed Raising Mix.

Staking allows your plant to spread a little wider than trellising and this is a good method for most gardens as well as tomatoes grown in pots where more elaborate methods wont fit. There also needs to be a strong climbing frame built in or next to the tub for the vine to climb up.
